DON’T Vote Republican, don’t vote at all, because frankly, you’re obviously either too ignorant or stupid to vote!
As usual, the Republican Party as a whole and so-called “conservatives” that occupy that space, have created more “straw man” arguments attacking cultural issues in America. These attacks, meant to stoke the Republican voter base specifically and the American electorate generally, are part and parcel of the usual playbook invoked by those who claim adherence to the tenets of “right-wing” ideologies.
The latest and most vociferous attacks, now invoke the terms, “woke,” “wokeism” and “wokeness,” to explain why the so-called “Left” is ruining America. The most vocal among these proponents of an “anti-woke” agenda are some, running for the office of President of the United States in the 2024 election. Governor Ron DeSantis, Mister “Florida is where woke goes to die,” has made this a mainstay of his campaign. He and other Republican candidates have glommed on to labeling anything that does not comport with a white nationalist agenda as “woke.” Specifically, labeling the teaching of Black, Hispanic/Latino, Native/Indigenous or Asian history in America, as “Critical Race Theory (CRT)” and thus part of the culture of “wokeness.” This is the case especially the case as it relates to Black history in particular. The rationale for banning the teaching of this history, claim the “anti-wokers,” is that the reality of American history, is making our poor, white American children, feel bad about being white and therefore should be banned. As such, this material is labeled CRT and therefore part of the “woke” culture with the goal of indoctrinating our poor (white) children. Banning the teaching of history is now couched in terms of protecting children. Really, who would have “thunk” it? Concurrent with and in service to the banning of history, is the banning of books. Not only are books being banned in schools, but some communities are banning books in public libraries. Again, in service of suppressing the “woke” agenda. I agree, these children that do feel bad about being white, should feel bad about being white. Not out of some sense of “white guilt” for America’s past sins but, for having parents that are so stupid, they think the banning of history is a good thing for them.
There is a belief that the promotion of equal rights for women, gays, people of color, the incarcerated, formerly incarcerated and the poor, are aspects of “woke” culture. These notions are polluting our national psyche and must be countered, particularly if you are a Christian, conservative and an “America First” white nationalist. To bear witness to this fact, one need not look beyond the current state of our state and national governments; the incompetence, the dysfunction and inability to legislate are the current mainstays of American politics.
The furtherance of the “woke,” “wokeism,” “wokeness,” nonsense among politicians is not surprising. What is surprising and concerning is that there are many on the so-called “Left” spectrum of the political or social divide that have also propagated the ideology of “wokeness.” Some agree with the conservatives or fail to counter the false narratives associated with the notion of being “woke,” which is particularly dangerous if you have a national platform to promote these views. One notable personality that furthers the notion of liberal “wokeness” is Bill Maher on his show “Real Time” on Max (formerly HBO). Surprisingly to me, Maher, a self-described “Old-time liberal,” rails against the notion of liberals in America now being too “woke.” This is surprising to me because Maher, with whom I frequently agree and disagree at times, appears, for all his faults and at times misguided notions, to be a thoughtful and intelligent person. Of late however, Bill appears to be off base in his agreement with the right-wing talking heads, regarding the scope and negative ramifications of being “woke.” See recent shows where he strokes the anti-woke egos of Ron DeSantis and Ted Cruz.
The folks decrying the pervasive and destructive nature of “wokeism” by the liberal left have created a straw man to explain the cultural existence, persistence, overuse, and destructiveness of political correctness. Liberals now jump down your throat if you say, “Latinos” instead of “LatinX”; “homeless” instead of “unhoused”; “Indian or Native” instead of “Indigenous” and; of course, the old standard of “colored people,” instead of “people of color.” The conservatives add to the nonsense, by calling the teaching of history of racial groups as CRT; the destructive nature of gender or queer studies, requiring new legislation and wacko parents at school board meetings. In addition to, as previously noted, the wholesale banning of books that even hint at any of these issues. All these things contribute to the furtherance of a dialogue on being “woke.”
I’ve got some bad news for you folks, there is no such thing as “woke,” “wokeism,” or “wokeness,” as alleged by the aforementioned. Being “woke,” quite simply means “be aware.” The context of the term was first expressed by blues man, Huddie Ledbetter a.k.a. Lead Belly who stated, “I advise everybody be a little careful when they go along through there…stay woke, keep your eyes open.” The blues man said this in response to a song he wrote in 1938 about the Scottsboro Boys, the group of nine Black boys falsely accused and convicted of rape in Jim Crow Alabama in 1931. How this one admonition to be aware and careful, has morphed into the expansive notion of political correctness and cultural over-sensitivity is beyond me. Yet here we are, taking a simple phrase and bastardizing it into some kind of neo-liberal cultural movement.
As with most things, when Black folks create or latch on to a phrase, gesture or trend to extol the significance or uniqueness of (an aspect) of Black culture, whites, who want to “be like us,” without having to deal with the shit that comes from “being us,” will follow a time-tested pattern. Once thoroughly popularized, one of two things usually happen; first, they claim it as their own, see Bo Derek in the movie “10,” (white girl with dreadlocks); the high-five; the “man-hug”; ass (that’s right, I said it). Then there’s also the actress/singer/dancer Jennifer Lopez. After J-Lo released the movie “Selena,” every white woman in the country wanted a big ‘ole round badonkadonk, as if Ms. Lopez invented it (also see Kim Kardashian). Black folks know, “Sistas” been rocking the “boot boot,” the “backyard,” “junk in the trunk,” for oh, I don’t know, FOREVER! Sir Mix-A-Lot tried telling you fools long ago in “Baby Got Back,” about the virtues of “Sister booty,” but I digress.
The second thing white folks do when a “black thing” becomes popular, is condemn it e.g., “Black Lives Matter,” condemned by saying “All Lives Matter.” Remember the so-called journalist, Megyn “Santa and Jesus are white” Kelly, when she asked if Michelle Obama was exhibiting threatening behavior, when she gave Barack a fist bump? You can’t find a white person now who doesn’t use the fist bump (or high-five), instead of the standard handshake. Covid-19 solidified its use and is now a mainstream form of greeting or celebration.
I know I’ve covered a lot here just to make the point that the focus and condemnation of “woke,” “wokeism,” “wokeness,” is bullshit. The reason I have placed it in quotes throughout this essay, is to stress its nonexistence as a concept. However, I can’t emphasize enough, that when we allow idiots like Ron DeSantis; “Cheese-eating Negroes” like former, “I’m not-really-a” candidate for President, Tim Scott (also see Herman “999” Cain or Ben “Yes Massa” Carson); “Vivek the Obtuse” and; Bill “I mean well, but really don’t get it” Maher, to decry nonexistent “wokeism” as a destructive force we, as a society, do ourselves a grave disservice.
Once upon a time, Senator Chuck Grassley was a person and member of Congress who could be respected despite party affiliation. Senator Grassley demonstrated that he was a person of integrity, moral courage, and principled positions. One could disagree with the Senator on his positions on policy matters, but one knew his views were sincere and came from a position of having the best interests of Iowans and the nation in mind. What happened to THAT guy? Now, we have in Senator Grassley an old, out-of-touch legislator, who is pandering to the extreme right-wing segment of the Republican Party. I’m not surprised by what we have in Senator Grassley now, because I saw the shift coming when “Grandpa Chuck” got on board with the Republican “Death Panel” crowd during the Obama administration. It’s both sad and disheartening to see a once-respected legislator become what Senator Grassley has become, a pandering, amoral, doddering old fool and Trumpian sycophant. “Grandpa Chuck” has demonstrated that he is willing to put his desire for power, ahead of the needs of Iowa and the United States. Chuck has demonstrated that he is willing to corrupt the legislative process while undermining our government. At worst, it’s borderline treasonous, at best it’s just corrupt and destructive. Don’t run for re-election Chuck, we don’t need you anymore, we need integrity back in Iowa and national politics.
Racism 101: Explained for Dummies, White Nationalists and You
“Racism,” one of the most overused and misused words in the American lexicon. People of color and white people throw the word around anytime there is a mention of or reference to an issue or topic that even tangentially involves race. Unfortunately, the word is so misused that its actual application and meaning has been diluted to the point of non-viability to truly describe an issue, person or situation that truly does fall into the category of being “racist.”
First, the United States of America was founded on the notion that “All men are created equal,” but, the Founders meant, “All white men of property and influence are created equal.” The Founding Fathers, in their inestimable wisdom, wrote their philosophies of race, class and sex directly into the Constitution. Slavery was not only supported in our founding document, but designated the enslaved persons as 3/5 human to ensure disproportionate representation of slaveholders in the government of the new nation. Women were designated as subservient to men by virtue of their exclusion regarding their basic human rights and most notably inability to vote. Indigenous and enslaved persons were not citizens at the founding and ratification of the Constitution and as the Supreme Court would later officially state, possessing any rights that need be respected by white men. The country would fully embrace and act upon these tenets and in fact, continues to do so today.
The notion that we are in a post-racial society as posited by many (surprisingly not only white people), is a non-sensical, illogical, irrational position given the existence of abundant evidence to the contrary. However, given the proliferation and popularity of this position, it is incumbent upon this writer to first explain to the masses, the ignorant, ill-informed many, a large segment of the American populus in other words, exactly what racism is and what racism isn’t.
Many believe falsely, that anyone, of any race, can be racist. There are those that know this is a false proposition but embrace the utility of promoting this false notion for their own benefit and purposes. Racism, in this country, the United States of America, is a euphemism for white supremacy…period. It is one of the three pillars upon which the nation was built. Metaphorically, think of the country as a three-legged stool with the founding principles upon which it was built as analogous to the stools three legs. Those legs (foundation) consist of racism, classism and sexism, built into and enshrined in our Constitution.
The definition of racism is a frequent one for this writer and even many people of color misstate its meaning, believing again, “anyone can be racists.” The problem is that many if not most people that hold the view that “anyone can be racist” are conflating racism with prejudice. Everyone can clearly be prejudiced and in fact most of us are about something. The most definitive definition embraced by this writer was put forth by Professor Corramae Richey Mann many years ago, but is still the most accurate to date. Professor Mann in her book, “Unequal Justice: A Question of Color,” wrote:
“Race prejudice is rooted in the belief that one’s own race warrants a positive attitude and that other races should be viewed negatively. When institutional power is added to prejudice, the result is racism. Within such a perspective, if the social, political, economic, religious, and educational structures of the major institutions in a society benefit a particular race—the “white” race in the United States at the expense of other races, the practice is identified as institutional racism. While American minority peoples, similar to Euro-Americans, can be prejudiced, the fact that they lack control of institutional power prevents their subordination of Euro-Americans and negates definitions of them as racists. Therefore, the only accurately defined racists in the United States are those who control the primary institutions which are used to the advantage of one race at the expense of other races. Notions of “black racism” and “reverse racism” as practiced by minority group members are definitionally impossible. Finally, the negative and differential impact of racist practices against the subordinate American minorities by the Euro-American dominant group is discrimination.”
When you hear many individuals state, particularly now during a presidential campaign, that “systemic racism” or racism generally is on the wane, know this is either a deliberate, malicious ignoring of the historical and contemporary record; ignorance; or outright stupidity. It is particularly concerning when people of color put forth this position. In the Republican presidential candidate field we have Larry Elder, Tim Scott (Blacks) and Vivek Ramaswamy (of Indian descent) asserting this very notion. Elder and Scott have broadcast this notion for years in their quest for white affirmation and acceptance. ‘Phama-bro’ Ramaswamy, presidential candidate, new on the scene and apparently to politics, and relative cultural issues, uses this line in his efforts at self-promotion. Vivek stated "Is there existing racism in the United States? Of course, there is. But those last burning embers of racism — the last thing I want to do is throw kerosene on it." The metaphor of racism in America as a ‘fire’ combined with the analogy that the fire is now down to its “burning embers,” is beyond nonsensical. This view, which Vivek is pushing hard, belies a gross misunderstanding of the historical record regarding the founding of America. Additionally, it belies a level of ignorance of the institutional systems at work that have historically been utilized to oppress and control people of color throughout our history.
Republicans have unfortunately been nothing short of genius in their utilization of and ability to adapt and evolve their racist messaging over the years. When overt racist language and behavior became publicly disdained, the parties switched ideologies and the southern Democrats (most virulent racists in the country), switched to the Republican party, the party of asses, I mean donkeys, instituted the Southern Strategy. The messaging and language evolved over the years to the present refined, sharply-honed, tag lines now repeated ad infinitum by Republicans generally, and the ultra-right (Mag-Ettes) specifically. You have notable presidential candidates, like Ron DeSantis (another moron), who will frequently quote Martin Luther King’s statement from his “I Have a Dream” speech regarding his children being judged by the “content of their character, not by the color of their skin.” Cherry picking King’s words to legitimize racist policies and procedures pertaining to business and education, instituted in Florida. By taking King’s words out of context, the likes of “Bobble-head” Ron ignore King’s many admonitions for America to address the gross inequalities regarding institutional racism, oppression, economics, civil rights and all of the racialized, systemic issues, holding people of color down in America.
As candidates, then presidents the administrations of Nixon, Reagan, Bush Sr., Bush Jr. and now Trump, all pandered to racist ideologies, held by a vast number of the American people. No one has garnered the support or exposed the reality of the deeply held racist beliefs of the American people more effectively than Donald J. Trump, one of the most racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, incompetent, corrupt, unethical and immoral individuals to ever hold the office of President of the United States. Unlike his predecessors, DJT has returned to the public use of overt racist language in his appeal to white supremacy and white nationalism. A majority of those claiming to be Republicans utilize the more subtle “dog whistle” verbiage to emphasize and criticize perceived Black American dysfunction by saying “urban, Black Lives Matter (BLM), Anti-Facist (Antifa), woke, Critical Race Theory (CRT)” among many terms or coded expressions. Racists couch these terms in supposedly neutral terms but People of Color, particularly Black folks, know exactly what they are saying, who they are saying it to (other racists) and what they mean when they say it. The effectiveness of Republican messaging is evident in the numerous laws, policies and practices being instituted across America at every level of government, from dog catcher to Congress; city council to Supreme Court; school board to President of the United States, we are in the shit. It is no coincidence, that the most egregious of these laws, policies, practices being passed, are in the former Confederate States of America (Florida, Texas, Arkansas on and on). When I hear a governor like Sarah Huckabee Sanders defend her state’s most recent laws to “protect white children from self-hatred or shame of being white,” by learning Black history, strains of “The South shall rise again,” or some redneck shouting “We got to saaaave the Wiiiite Raaaace!” ringing in my ears. Keep ‘em ignorant Sarah, Ron, Greg et al, we wouldn’t want your little darlings to be any less ignorant than you (actually we do).
Presidential candidate Ramaswamy also made the point recently, that the very presence of he, Scott and Elder in the Republican presidential race, negates any accusations of the party and its adherents being racist. Again, a failure to understand the definition of racism is and how it functions in society. Vivek is correct about one thing, he, Scott and Elder are not racists, they can’t be, they’re not white. They can however, despite their race or color, promote racism, which they do, by co-signing the perspectives, views, philosophies, theories, actions and behaviors of racists (whites), to whom they support, pledge allegiance and sycophantically praise. It is not unlike the argument one might make (seen and heard often), when Black cop(s), violate the rights of a person of color. The comment often expressed by the white folks (even some not white folks) is akin to “Can’t be racism, the cops are Black too.” The color of the perpetrator does not negate the act as racist in nature, it merely means that while the perpetrator may not be themselves racist, they may very well be promoting a racist agenda or purpose. In a racist system, say a police department, paramilitary in nature, the cops are cops first (the Blue Line) and follow the policies and procedures endemic to that department. They go along to get along because they know if they don’t they will be ostracized, overlooked for promotion or worse. Therefore, while they themselves cannot be racist, they often utilize and promote the racist policies of those departments and institutions. Like the military, you follow orders, or else.
Derek Bell, noted professor and scholar regarding race, racism and race relations in America explains the role and reasoning behind Black folks that promote racist policies, persons and ideologies e.g. Tim Scott, Larry Elder, presidential candidates, who skin, grin and genuflect for white acceptance, tangential inclusion and white largesse. Bell explained the reason for this behavior, currently being exhibited by Larry and Tim and their ilk, in his book, “Faces at the Bottom of the Well: The Permanence of Racism,” published in 1992; The Rules of Racial Standing (Chapter 6). Bell states in Rule Four:
FOURTH RULE
When a black person or group makes a statement or takes an action that the
white community or vocal components thereof deem “outrageous,” the
latter will actively recruit blacks willing to refute the statement or condemn
the action. Blacks who respond to the call for condemnation will receive
superstanding status. Those blacks who refuse to be recruited will be
interpreted as endorsing the statements and action and may suffer political
or economic reprisals.
Bell published this work in 1992, and we’re still dealing with this shit in 2023! Bell’s work from 1992 was both prescient and understated in the level of credibility these colored sycophants would garner from their white handlers and white society at large. These Black folks used to be few and far between and fortunately we rarely heard from them. Now there are many of them, endorsing the racist ideologies, actions, and behaviors of the far-right (white nationalists/Mag-Ette’s) and white society at large. They appear in politics (local/national), the media (local/national, cable systems) and significantly on major social media sites. As tempted as I am to list many of the most prominent members of this group, I am electing to reserve that for a future blog. Trust me, I will be calling these coons out soon. At present, I am focused on the “colored” presidential candidates as they and their views on race are currently front and center on the national stage.
It pains me to focus so much on this guy (Ramaswamy) and the other “colored” candidates for president (Elder, Scott), but their expressions regarding race in America are beyond the pale. Vivek’s statements are so far afield, those of Scott and Elder pale in comparison. Even they, Elder and Scott, aren’t as stupid as this guy. This person (Vivek) is running to be the President of the United States and his views on race are not only unconscionable but ludicrous. Most recently Ramaswamy said at a town hall in Pella, Iowa, on Friday, 2024, “I'm sure the boogeyman white supremacist exists somewhere in America. I've just never met him. Never seen one, never met one in my life, right?” “Maybe I'll meet a unicorn sooner. And maybe those exist, too.” Approximately 24 hours later, a white gunman armed with a handgun and an AR-15 adorned with swastikas entered a dollar store in Jacksonville, Florida, and killed three Black people before taking his own life. VV also called for a return to a “colorblind meritocracy” in America. When was that, Vivek? This guy is running around Iowa for his campaign, spouting a whole lot of nonsense in his quest for the presidency (which BTW will NEVER happen). I live in Iowa, hit me up Vivek, I will be more than happy to have and honest and open debate with you on the topic of race or anything else (except maybe pharmaceuticals) and tell you, to your face, how full of shit you are and not even remotely fit to run a men’s bathroom, much less the country. Name the time and place VV, I’m in.
These individuals, Black and other persons of color that help promote the notion that in America we are in a post-racial society; systemic racism is non-existent; white supremacy and privilege is a myth or we only need to “go back to being colorblind,” (when we never were), are in fact furthering the cause and continuation of a racist America. To be clear, if they’re not white, they’re not racists, just useful tools, fools and idiots manipulated for the benefit of a white power structure that controls every institution in America. Each and every area of human endeavor in America has been and continues to be white controlled, economics, education, entertainment, labor, law, politics, religion, sex and war.
Educate yourselves America, the inmates are running the asylum!
I have always been somewhat confused at the prospect of Black people, African-Americans if you will, that are, in contemporary America proudly proclaiming allegiance to today’s Republican Party. I completely understand that decades ago, it was the Republicans that promoted more rights (voting, civil, human) than the Democrats. However, if one truly knows the history of America, the promotion of those rights, primarily following the Civil War during the period called Reconstruction, was not based on a love of Black folks by “Lincoln” republicans, but a means to ‘self-interest’ by the Republican Party to garner votes and thus power from the newly freed enslaved persons.
So, when current Black folks claim adherence to the Republican Party generally and conservatism specifically and cite the “we were the Party of Lincoln,” line, I call BULLSHIT. The parties switched ideologies beginning in the 1950’s culminating in a complete 180-degree ideological switch solidified by the 1980s. (Read a description provided at the Students of History Website: “The Great Switch: How the Republican & Democratic Parties Flipped Ideologies”; The Great Switch: How Republicans and Democrats Flipped Ideologies (studentsofhistory.com), an informative easy read.
As a result of this switch, current republicans are the former southern democrats who, as we all know, defended slavery, fought in a rebellion to maintain it going so far as to secede from the Union. Despite, the loss in the Great War, the Civil War, those same sentiments (overt racism, sexism, classism, with beliefs of Black, minority, Jewish, female, gay and immigrant inferiority), not only running rampant, but finding mainstream expression in public discourse. Once upon a time it was considered impolite and impolitic to express these sentiments in the public square but, with the ascendency of the “Orange Menace” to the presidency, such sentiments are now mainstream. To be clear, they have always existed, Trump didn’t invent this shit, but as stated, they were generally, with a few exceptions, limited to private company and not as overtly expressed as they are now. These ideologies, bolstered by irrational conspiracy theories, beliefs in white nationalism and general ignorance and stupidity, continue to thrive and have firmly found a home in the Republican Party of today.
There is clearly a battle raging within the Republican Party between “traditional” party members and the ascendent “ultra-conservative” or “Make America Great Again (MAGA)” crowd. Traditional, including some staunch conservative Republicans (i.e., Liz Cheney types) are losing the battle, at least for now. The MAG-ets, have co-opted the House of Representatives, the Supreme Court (SCOTUS), through the leadership of “Moscow” Mitch McConnell and complete morons are driving the clown-car in Congress. No need to name them here, we all know who they are. They have elected not to legislate, but agitate while supporting the most egregious policies the country has ever seen. Attempts (with success) to roll back civil rights, gay rights, women’s rights, voting rights on and on, for everyone not ultra-conservative, have found a welcome home in the current Republican Party. These representatives, senators, federal jurists, in conjunction with state legislatures, governors, other elected officials at the state level, have enacted thousands of new laws and regulations to return the United States to the glorious days of white power, privilege and supremacy these “white nationalist” have longed for, for so long.
But I digress, the topic here is Black conservatives, WHY and WTF? The duplicity, rampant corruption, fraud, outright incompetence and family-sponsored “douche-baggery” of the Trump Administration was glaring, obvious and deliberate. It is unfathomable how any American of voting age, particularly non-white, could support this guy. The fact that so many Black (and other minorities (racial and ethnic)) folks do is dumbfounding. I have noted that Black males in particular appear to support this assclown more so than Black women who are holding it down in the Democratic Party (thank God). I get it, the “Apprentice” was (at least in the beginning) somewhat entertaining and I confess, I watched the first couple of seasons with interest. It was funny and entertaining, at least until it wasn’t. But I realized, apparently unlike some, that it was a reality show, entertainment, not a basis to elect an incompetent buffoon to the highest office in the land. Many of these Black conservatives got on board with the “Donald” as a result of that show, like “Diamond and Silk” who the President of the United States granted semi-notoriety by granting them access to him and the office of the presidency. Clearly ignorant and uneducated, these two sisters got their 15 minutes with Trump (at least until Diamond kicked out in 2023) who, despite his overtly racist expressions, claimed he was the “least racist person” to ever exist. The sisters, vloggers on YouTube, began as Democrats and supported Black causes such as BLM or exposing police brutality. Once they got on the “Trump train” it was all over; lust for fame and fortune drove them deep into the conservative shithole where they parroted the white supremacist nonsense spewed by the “cracka-ass-crackas” that now run the Party. Donny T. strove to surround himself with these “coonin’ and buffoonin’” Blacks to demonstrate he was “down with the Brown.” Preachers, rap stars (Koonye West “Ye”), politicians and even at least one contestant from the show (Omaroso). Newman became assistant to the President and director of communications for the Office of Public Liaison during the Trump administration in January 2017, fired by December. Ms. Manigualt Newman found religion when DJT kicked her Black ass to the curb, subsequently writing about what a racist turd he is (didn’t know that already?). Let us not forget that idiot you always see at MAGA rallies with that sign that says “Blacks for Trump” prominently positioned behind Trump on stage.
Frequently you hear the most prominent Black conservatives make statements such as “Blacks need to get off the Democratic plantation,” (often repeated by America’s favorite Mammy, Candace Owens), as if they believe that statement has some historical pertinence to or contextual significance today. Most of these folks have little to any actual knowledge of American history generally and Black history specifically, espouse views that are rife with ignorance and lacking seriousness and in-depth analysis. They are merely spouting tag lines, many of which are fed to them by the white folks pulling their strings behind the scenes. To be clear, conservatism has always been a staple in the Black community (religion, gay rights etc.). However, all Black conservatives are not the same; there is a distinct difference in the conservatism of say a Colin Powell, Condy Rice or Michael Steele (you used to be on my list Mike) and a Clarence Thomas, Tim Scott or Herman Cain (see ya’ Herm). The former at least appear to have, or had principles, the latter, not so much. As tempted as I am to list and point out the defects, on principles, morals, ethics attitudes and beliefs views of some of the more prominent/prestigious Black conservatives flapping their gums in the public space, I’m going to reserve that for future discussion. Teaser: the name I have for these folks involves the word “cheese.” It is my intention to delve more deeply into the specifics of Black conservatives a.k.a. the “Lost Tribe.”
This article is an introduction, to you and the fact that I am pissed off, fed up and determined to address the state of the country at present. It is inconceivable to me, that in my several decades of life I would ever see a decline and regression of rights, attempts to thwart democracy, attacks on everyone not white or Christian or male and the overt nature by fellow citizens to turn America into the shit-show that now exists. I have noted that damn-near everyone in this country feels they need to express their opinions, primarily on social media and every other public space. I have never felt that need, which is why I’m not on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter (now X) or any other social media site. However, with the looming presidential campaign of 2024, the regression of rights continually evolving in ‘Merica, I no longer feel I can remain silent. Therefore, I plan to agitate, pontificate, elucidate and educate to highlight the dominant issues facing our great (but failing to live up to its creed) nation. This advocacy will initially be through my blog, but I fully intend to set up a YouTube channel in the not-too-distant future to “Vlog” opinions, knowledge and facts regarding the current state of the country. Stay tuned, in the words of a prominent, notorious asshole, “It will be wild.”
Looking at the state of the United States at present, a key fact upon which virtually all Americans agree, regardless of political affiliation or philosophical views is, Congress is dysfunctional. The question becomes, “Why is the government of the United States of America, incapable of governing?” One may argue about the partisanship that has evolved over the past few decades and the rampant tribalism that currently characterizes our government as the problem. While true, it exists on both sides but, one issue is the fact that we have legislators and judges, that are elected well into their old-age or appointed for life (federal judges). The current Congress, on average, is one of the oldest in history. In Iowa, Senator Chuck Grassley has just announced he is running for re-election; Chuck is currently 88 years-old and he is not the oldest member of the Senate! What is it about American congresspersons, that makes them believe they should be in Congress for life? More importantly, why do the American people tolerate it? Both sides, Democrats and Republicans, have extremely old members in leadership, in both houses. Without citing the ages here, note there are several 70 and 80-plus year-olds in the Senate and the House, many obviously past their prime, physically, mentally and emotionally.
The system is constructed in such a way that the longer you are in Congress, the more power you amass. What we are observing now, is how these power-hungry sept and octogenarians are destroying the country, through inaction and policies that prioritize the rich in America in order to maintain their hold on power. You will note, there is no mention of political specific affiliation of these ancients, though there is clearly one party where the “Old Farts” in power are more egregious in their anti-American behavior than the other. Despite this fact, both parties are guilty of having members remaining too long in Congress to the detriment of the country.
One solution is the oft-debated notion of term limits for Congress and the judiciary. Unlikely, term limits being passed by Congress are the same as the likelihood of a fair system of taxation being implemented in the country (ain’t happenin’). The “Old Farts” are not going to relinquish their power voluntarily or force their true constituents (the richest 1%) to pay their fair share. Power must be wrested from their ‘cold dead hands,’ (literally). As noted by a famous activist, “Power concedes nothing without struggle.”
It is only when the country has deteriorated to a level much worse than its current state (if one can imagine), that the American people will demand meaningful change. It will have to get much worse than it is now (and it will) before such demands will be made of our government by the people. However, a good start will be for the American people to demand that, we get the “Old Farts,” that are destroying our country, out of government. #G.O.F.O.
America has long used the racial divide to separate and control the citizenry of this country. Face it, despite the reluctance of most Americans, whites particularly, to address the issue of America’s racial history, it is an irrefutable fact that racism continues to thrive and reigns supreme in the US. This is particularly true in our halls of power. Racism is and continues to be one of the founding principles of this country, along with sexism and classism. Think of the foundations of America as the legs on three-legged stool and the seat as the seat of power upon which this country is governed. You realize those legs are racism, classism and sexism and that seat is the three branches of government. Don’t take my word for it, read the Constitution of the United States, which was written for and by propertied white men, to the exclusion of people of color, women and non-propertied white men.
The three-legged stool foundation metaphor of America, is manifest today in the movement to reverse the gains regarding civil and human rights in this country. Leading this effort is the legislative branch of the country, the American Congress. In concert with Republican-led state legislatures, the Congress of the United States is effectively dismantling long fought for protections to our most basic and fundamental rights; human rights, privacy rights, voting rights, you name it, they’re dismantling it, with gusto.
Time after time in states across the country, Republican legislatures are drafting laws to turn back the clock on civil and human rights for all citizens, but particularly those targeting people of color, women, and the poor.
Nowhere is this trend more evident than in the Congress of the United States where so-called “leaders” are perverting, corrupting and making a mockery of their roles as public servants and servants of the people. Both parties, unfortunately, are guilty of self-serving actions and behaviors that, ignore both the wishes of the majority of Americans and needs of the country. Republicans however, have demonstrated that they will no longer even “pretend” to be legislating for the good of the citizenry and the country. Nowhere is the failure of national legislators, specifically the United States Senate, to do their sworn duty more evident than the “clown show” of confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. Republicans demonstrated that they are not only openly racist in their treatment of Judge Jackson, but revel in their behavior, knowing it will appeal to their respective bases. The overt nature of the racist behavior of Senators Hawley, Cruz, McConnell, Blackburn, Kennedy, Graham, Cornyn, Cotton and Tillis, Republican members of the Judiciary committee, was disgraceful. They are collectively, along with similar members of the House, clear members of what I now deem to be, our “Ku Klux Kongress.” Under the guise of questioning about pedophilia and “soft on crime” rulings, these senators attacked, vilified, and denigrated the most qualified candidate for the Supreme Court to come along for years. The question is why? What is obvious, but never stated openly during this confirmation process, is simply this, she is a woman, and she is black. Those named senators are, not ironically, all from the former Confederate States of America, you know, traitors that lost the Civil War. Their performance during this confirmation process was particularly despicable. Senators Graham, Cruz, Hawley, Blackburn, Kennedy and Cotton, might as well have been waiving the Confederate flag as they questioned Judge Jackson.
These hearings and these so-called representatives of the nation have been and continue be a national disgrace. Clearly though, they have no shame, no morals, no desire to represent the country as rational, serious members of government. Though not a member or direct participant in the confirmation hearing, they are led by the Grand Wizard of the KKK wing of the Senate and again, member from a former state in rebellion, Kentucky; Moscow Mitch McConnell, a sad, pathetic, reprehensible example of a human being and thoroughly corrupt representative of “the people.”
No matter how they might couch their objections to Judge Jackson in their feeble attempts to hide their true nature and intent, the racist character they display is so overt and evident it cannot be denied or refuted. Unfortunately, they neither care nor exhibit concern over their behavior because they have power; power given to them by fellow Americans that share their views and despite the protestations and incessant whining, revel in their racist attitudes, values, and beliefs.
The United States is not at present, contrary to popular white belief, a post-racial, post-sexist or post-classist society. Rich, powerful and thoroughly corrupt white men (and women), are assuring that the three-legged stool of America’s foundations, racism, sexism and classism, are as strong today as they ever were. As they have done historically, these powerful elected officials have effectively co-opted poor whites into believing they are “with them,” by stoking the flames of racial animus. These efforts have proven, again as they have historically in this country, remarkably effective in the maintenance of the hegemonic influence of white supremacy in American government. Nowhere was this more evident than by the election of the “Orange Menace,” himself, a.k.a. Donald Trump.
This is the America of today, one in which the founding fathers would be proud, a thoroughly racist, sexist and classist society, as they intended. We will continue to be thus, far into the foreseeable future, given the propensity of Americans to elect wealthy, primarily male, white, immoral and corrupt leaders to our nation’s highest offices. America’s Ku Klux Kongress will be with us for a long time.
